I've been living in the same house for a long time, and we always use about 200 cubic feet/month, getting a water bill around $40 like clockwork. I just got a $200 water bill saying I used more than 800 cubic feet- what would cause this??

I checked the water meter and the last two weeks I only used 100 cubic feet of water, so I don't think it's a leak.

Thank you!

Does the bill show the meter readings? When mine did that we found that they had transposed two digit when entering the meter readings.

Well if you can't find a leak, I'd call a plumber, and have them verify that there is no leaks. I would then call the city and tell them something is wrong, for one they should be able to look back in the records, and see that you have never used that much water.

So that would leave a few reasons on what happened, the meter was read wrong, the meter doesnt work properly, or possibly the person entering the billing information into the computer messed up.

Hmm, so your meter is working properly with no leaks since it now says only 100cf for two weeks? Most likely it's not the meter. The first thing that comes to my mind is a sprinkler system. If you don't have one of those than it has to be a intermittently malfunctioning draw from one of your appliances. Would be odd tho. Water heater, washer? Would a neighbor have access to an outside hose?

some years in the past, that happened to my Grandmother. because it grew to become out, the water meter became undesirable. I have been given the water district to put in a clean meter and that took care of it. in case you have a plumber pal who has appeared on the obtrusive issues (I mean, a bill it is over 10 circumstances what your water bill is loopy) so, it would would desire to be some thing substantial! outdoors your place, is there any super moist spots on the floor the place there should not be water? if so, that would desire to be from a leaky water line. it would would desire to be a exceptionally undesirable leak too. Did your plumber pal inspect your water meter whilst each and all the water is off on your place to work out if there have been a leak? once you're no longer making use of any wayer on your place, in case you seem on the water meter, no remember if it is working, meaning you're dropping water. different than that, seem under your place additionally to work out if it extremely is extremely moist under there. once you have completed all this, call your water district. There would desire to be an blunders yet their first reaction is often going to be that the two you used the water or you have a leak. besides, solid luck with that.

there are 3 possiblities here....1. the meter reader read the meter wrong... 2. the meter itself is not working properly... 3. you have what plumbers call a slab leak.......ways to fix these problems.....1.fire the meter reader..... 2. call the city whee you live and have them come out and install a new meter(should be no cost to you)....3. have a plumber come out and do a slab leak detection...the should locate, expose, and repair the leak.... good luck

That sounds like either a leak or someone made a mistake when reading the meter.
