PCTools products do get good reviews. The good thing is they have free versions of their products. They work great. Spyware Doctor from the Google pack is a must. I highly recommend it. I bought Webroots Spysweeper and spyware doctor finds stuff spysweeper does not. Having both is a perfect combo and I recommend running two anti-spyware products.

Anti-Spyware for a cost.
Personally I bought Webroot's Spysweeper, their product is great and well worth the money. Watch Best Buy ads because sometimes it goes on sale for $10 to $15.

There are free anti-virus scanners availble. They work well. I like AVG and PCTools anti-viruses the best of the free anti-virus programs.
If you are not willing to spend money it is good to have some kind of anti-virus software

AdAware or Avast. They are good and are free, with no trial. Otherwise I would recommend AVG but there is a 30 day trial to that one. I think AVG is the best out of all of those though.

You do not want to use Windows XP firewall because it is as they say, "One way virus protection". With most firewalls (be they be free or a paid subscription) protect both ways in your computer, incoming or outgoing. Incoming in that it protects against a virus from getting in your computer. But if a virus should happen to get in, the virus protection keeps the virus reporting out of your computer to give you away.

I have listed a few anti virus and a few anti spyware programs that are available for download and are completely free: I will not get involved with the rights and wrongs of each package or its effectiveness or indeed “This is best” or “This is crap” statements. Whatever you do, just make sure you have one of each type installed, updated and fully working:
