If I store gas in one of those standard, red, legally approved containers, will the gas eventually go bad in any way?

If so, how long can I store it for before the gas is no longer suitable for use in a car?

And are there any tip on the proper storage of gasoline?

Thanks!

The gas formulas used now will cause the gas to go bad in about a year. Its the Ethanol that is being added that causes it to go bad. So yes it will go bad in about a year.

With every day pass, our country is getting into more and more trouble. The inflation, unemployment and falling value of dollar are the main concern for our Government but authorities are just sleeping, they don’t want to face the fact. Media is also involve in it, they are force to stop showing the real economic situation to the people. I start getting more concern about my future as well as my family after watching the response of our Government for the people that affected by hurricane Katrina.

According to recent studies made by World Bank, the coming crisis will be far worse than initially predicted. So if you're already preparing for the crisis (or haven't started yet) make sure you watch this video at http://www.familysurvival.tv and discover the 4 BIG issues you'll have to deal with when the crisis hits, and how to solve them fast (before the disaster strikes your town!) without spending $1,000s on overrated items and useless survival books.

Interesting question. And the answers are just as good. But here is a kicker, it is said that petroleum that has been stored since World War 2 is in such a good state, that it is still usable. If this true, then the petroleum companies have been deliberately adding contaminates to petroleum based fuels to degrade it. There is a rumour that if you run petrol through a filter made out of Topaz (which is a gemstone) it should improve the quality of older fuels. Again it is a rumour and may not be true.

Gas can last for a long time if it is keptin in an airtight container such as a metal sealed gas can but if it is in a container that breathes it will go bad after as soon as a couple weeks, it can also gather moisture from the air

Just like anything else like milk, orange juice, and even water, it does go bad over time.

That being said, gasoline in a sealed container blocked from sun light and excesive temperatures can stay good for months.

However, not in a sealed container, in the sun, outdoors is good for about two days.

Paint the exterior white to keep it as cool as possible a couple of vents like you would see on a cold air return in a house, the containers if made for gas and are plastic are designed for expansion and will expand even if not in direct sunlight.

Gas loses octane in a very short time, so I wouldn't use any gas stored more than a couple weeks in MY car.

When I run my ATV's, any gas left over is used in the car right away, because they don't run well on old gas.
