Usually stores have deep discounts on popular items. Best way to check is check the websites for that store a week before. Also the newspaper will have all the black Friday ads.

The sales are normally for specific items that are advertised ahead of time. For example, Macy's list of Black Friday specials has already been made public on Black Friday web sites:

You can check the Black Friday web sites or the Thanksgiving Day newspapers for a complete list of sale items. Keep in mind the the better the deal, the faster it is to sell out quickly. Don't expect the good stuff to still be available later in the day. In fact, some items will sell out in minutes after the store opens (usually 5:00am).
