Just pretend that he feels the same way. Before telling him your feelings make him promise he won't hate you for it.

Ask him if he wants to go to the movies or something and then when you are there say to him something like, We have been mates for ages and I really like you and just wanted to know if maybe you wanted to give a boyfriend girlfriend thing and I don't want it to be weird if you say no. So give it a shot and if he says no then it isn't meant to be. You can still be mates
