It is revelant to European history (moreso to British history), however, there are parts that are historically inaccurate. Here are a couple:

1. Elizabeth I and Walter Raleigh were never a romantic couple. It was more of a business partnership thing.

2. Elizabeth wasn't that stubborn as she was portrayed in the film. She did listen to her military advisers on how to defeat the Spanish Armada.

This is one of the many attempts to invade Britain and capture it for a foreign power. Spain wanted to extend the empire and decided to meet the British navy in the British channel. One theory brought up by my jr. high teacher was that the 250 Spanish ships were heavier with cannons, thus making the armada more difficult to maneuver, allowing the smaller 135-ship British fleet to go in and do some damage (they didn't have huge cannons on their ships). In the film, it is emphasized that fireships were used against the Spanish Armada to defeat it. You might want to look at other theories. Heck, the British fleet might have been 150 ships.

The last time England was ever invaded and taken over SUCCESSFULLY was in 1066 at the Battle of Hastings where William the Conqueror (a Norman) defeated Harold Godwinson (right after Godwinson defeated Harald Hadrada and his viking warriors). Ever since then, it's been a crapshoot. The Spanish Armada failed, the "Napoleonic" navy failed, and the bombing of England in 1941 failed.

A lot of critics say Elizabeth The Golden Age is a movie more history than entertainment. The many historical plots in the movie are hard to understand and follow if you don't know your European history of the time. Sounds like a history teacher's dream to me.Hope that helps with your argument.
