If you look into the socket you will see a connection at the very center of the socket. Possibly about 1/8 of an inch to the side there is another connection sticking up. This connection is on the hot side of the wire. I have run into some cheep bulbs where the side of the bulb went all of the way down and around and hit this connection, causing a big short. I have used single filament bulbs in these lamps for years and didn't run into this problem. My suggestion is to use what it is made for.
