Well, a group of owls is called a 'college'; and a group of rhinocerouses is called a 'crash'; and a herd of kangaroos is called a 'mob'; and a school of whales is called a 'pod' or 'gam'.

Maybe because crows or ravens have wrongly been maligned as sinister because they would eat dead and dying people?

Because that is what a group of crows is called. Like a "gaggle" of geese.
