Are they better than traditional English first and surnames?

Should this generation cease to name their children that way and start with names that will be original for hundreds of years?

I would say that they are; come to think of it I like the name Autumn Topaz; it has a special meaning to me. You're talking about names that have special meanings, names that tell a story, names that are filled with emotion and beauty of the soul.
Yes, this generation just be the first to step forward into the daring of the new and adventurous.

Well some of those things are traditional English first names. Especially flowers: Rose, Lily, Violet (a color too!). Also, Nature, like Brooke, are real names. I think this generation should change the names a little bit. Like the first answerer said, why name someone somethng that everyone is named, when you can be something different?

A lot of 'traditional' English first and surnames ARE based on those kinds of names. Sawyer, Fisher, Scarlett, Jemma (my name lol), Greene, Sparrow, etc are all names based on those ideas. Smith, one of the most common English surnames, was based on the occupational 'smith' - blacksmith, ironsmith, goldsmith, etc.

And absolutely not, I don't think this generation should continue 'making up' names like they have been doing recently - but then again, many of their 'made-up' names are still based on things like places, songs, themes, etc.

There is no such thing as "original"..

You seriously want a generaton of our kids to be named ...

Titanium Maple Smith?

Delicious Sparrow Jones?

Crabapple Rainbow Jackson?

We already use gems, plants, and other sources for childrens names, like Opal, Ruby, Marigold, and I'm sure I could list hundreds more.

Might as well name a kid "Moon Unit", or "Dweezil"...

I know a young couple that named their children Ocean and Sky. Original to say the least, but not for me. If you want some originality, why not just change the spelling a little. I did. Jacqueline- Jacquelyn, Nicole-Nichol. Nice but original

I am naming my daughter after a flower. There are still some pretty names out there that dont have to be awkward. Names like Rose, grace, daisy, and many others are classics but are out of date so they are still original.

I think you're oversimplifying here.

I don't care for names like Plum, Blue, Happy, Sapphire, Hope, or Paris, but there are way worse names out there.

While I think there are should's and shouldn'ts, but this isn't one of them. You should choose names that are easily spellable and pronounciable, sound decent with your last name, and the initials don't spell something dumb.

I love unique names. Why call a child Sarah or Mary when you can call it Polly or Talia

I think it all depends on the name.I prefer Willow over Katie but I prefer Jelena over Paris. All names are different and different people like different names! Why do you think we all have different names?Because our parents like different names! God Bless! ♥
