I AM an American, so I take offense at some answers such as "dumb, fat", etc. We are like everyone else. We have our beliefs, our fears, our joys and sorrows. We criticize our government and try to make it through day to day. We don't always agree with everything we see and hear, but just like any other country, our leaders lie to us and are somewhat corrupt. Don't tell me your country, where ever it is, does not have the same. If we are as bad as some of you seem to think, why are so many people from around the world doing anything they can to get here? We have a lot of freedom, a lot of money, and a lavish lifestyle... but we also have respect for other people - we meaning the people, not necessarily our government. We care about helping others, working together to make things happen, giving of ourselves, and going to church on Sunday. We're not all dumb, fat or brainwashed. We're real people. Don't judge us - the real people - on the ones you see on TV - I'm not Britney Spears or a politician. But each country has its own embarrassing celebrities and scandals. To answer the basic question, an American is not someone you can put in one category and define. An American is simply a complicated human being just like everyone else.

An American is someone who was either born or legally became a citizen of this country. There are as of today well over 300 million of us. There are so many different ethnic/racial groups and we all blend together fairly well so I would say that an American is a person who is proud of their country and what their country stands for.
America has always been there at the beck and call for our allies when in time of need.
We have one of the strongest Military backings of any country. We are a rich and powerful country that I am very proud to be a part of.

There are 300 million Americans, so you get 300 million different answers. Anyone who thinks like an "American" could be considered to be one.
