I craved Subway when I was pregnant and my doctor was very happy with it because it was a way better craving than fast food would have been, lol. I've never heard that you shouldn't eat deli meats. Just make sure they are handled and stored properly and you should be ok.

Get the book "What to Expect When You're Expecting". It was indispensible to me during my 3 pregnancies.
The reason someone may have suggested this to you is that deli meats (and hot dogs, sausauges, bacon and any other cured meats) have nitrates and nitrites in them and are also very high in sodium. I haven't heard that they have a great impact on fetal development, however someone who is a naturalist and believes in all things holistic may have told you they are not good for you. Truly, they aren't even if you were NOT pregnant. But we eat them anyway, don't we? This falls more in the personal choice category. Eat them in moderation if you just can't live without.
Go to your deli and ask if they have any low or no nitrate/nitrite deli meats. You can also find them in them in health food stores and the frozen section where vegtarian and health foods are sold. I would think that turkey, chicken and roast beef would be low in nitrates/nitrites. Ham is cured. Barring that, it may actually be cheaper for you to buy a turkey breast and roast it and slice off your own preservative free and delicious lean meats for your sandwiches. You could always do tuna and egg salad sandwiches too. What about a great chees and veggie sandwich? Hummus and veggies on pita bread? Good ol' PB & J? Try "wraps" spread with flavored cream cheese and veggies. Or a southwest version with beans, cheese, corn, red onion, cilantro and avocado. The possibilities are endless. Don't get yourself stuck in a rut. Be creative! The "Expecting" books series also has a "What to Eat When You're Expecting" book. This may be helpful and take off some of the worry and "what do I make NOW??" pressures off of you. You have enough to worry about just being pregnant than to have to stress about what you eat.
Take a good prenatal vitiamin, drink plenty of water, don't smoke or drink alcohol, do take walks and exercise. The major DON'TS are the alcohol and smoking.
Good luck, sweetie! You are thinking about doing what's best for your baby and that is a huge step in the right direction! You are doing the right thing! Congrats! ~Pamela

You shouldn't eat them because they can contain Listeria, a micro-organism that can grow at 4 degrees celsius. You could eat salads, or maybe occaisionally some canned fish like tuna or something. Or things like jam or honey, or you could make extra for dinner the night before and save some for the next day. I don't know really, it is quite difficult. But yeah, if you trust your local deli it might not be too big a risk to eat them. All up to you.
Congrats and good luck

Just like everyone said, there are many options to eating sandwiches with deli meat. I used to rinse my deli meat in cold water and make sure it was super fresh. You can heat it in the microwave first to kill any bacteria. Good luck!

you can eat deli meats if they're heated. try soup, salads, pb&j, leftovers from dinner the night before, breakfast foods. there are a lot of things you can eat other than deli meats. I don't ever eat them because of my dietary issues and I eat lunch daily.

They just say that because of their nature of going spoiled. I personally eat ham and cheese like there is no tomorrow! You just need to be careful of undercooked deli meats and make sure they are fresh!

I eat veggie sandwiches, peanut butter sandwiches, all sorts of other sandwiches... fresh fruits, fresh or steamed veggies, rice, noodles, soup, salads, all sorts of stuff... plus if you REAAALLY want there are deli meat analogs (or pretend deli meats) out there - all the flavor, none of the risk.

You can have anything you want. There are certain kind of deli meats to avoid. Now lets try to have some common sense here. There are plenty of things to eat like cereal, hot pockets, soup, salad, chicken, steak, hamburger.....etc. As long as its not high in mercury, raw or undercooked, its safe.

heya, yeah its true, your not allowed to eat deli meats, the bactera etc isnt good for the baby, you get use to it after a while believe me (im 39 weeks pregnant) you could eat savories, toast, hummus and pita bread... later in your pregnancy you'll only need to snack frequently rather then have three main meals anyway!

They say meat should be heated up if you are going to eat it during pregnancy. I struggle with this a lot.
