I tend to read in whatever position I'm in until that position either begins to get painful or I get tired of that position.

On my left or right sides I typically hold the book open at the bottom of the page with that sides hand (ie left hand for left side and right hand for right side), occasionally having the other hand support the outside side of the book (the outside side is actually the side that face towards my feet). As I read in this position I slightly rotate the book so either the left or right page is the more predominante, putting slightly more pressure with the fingers on the side I'm currently reading to flatten it out a little.

On my back, I'd never try resting the book on my chest, that would be too much of a strain on my eyes. So instead I spread my arms out bent at the elbows so that my forearms point to the ceiling. I then hold the book in each hand with each thum better supporting it's side. The book is thusly kind of held over my face.

Then finally I read on my stomach where I can prop the book up with a hand (or hands) or just let it lay on the bed. Usually I have my "pillow" (I don't always have a pillow under me and usually use a rolled blanket or comforter as a reading pillow) under me to prop me up. Then I tend to further prop myself up by resting my head in one hand. If I'm using both hands to prop up the book, then I further prop myself up on my elbows.

As I sais in the beginning, I hold these positions until I either get tired of the position or the position begins to get painful. By painful I mean either my shoulders or my arms start to ache from being in that position to long. Or my back starts aching from reading on my stomach. Once that happens I change position.

Try reading sitting up with an extra pillow. Laying down in whatever position gets really uncomfortable after about 10 minutes. I find my shoulder starts aching. Also you are less likely to fall asleep whilst reading.

I like to read half up and half down. Usually on a couch, I put a bunch of pilows behind my head and back so that im at an angle and then pull my knees up. I then rest the book against my knees. It helps when Im readying books for class cos I can't fall asleep like that.

Lie on your back with a comfy pillow under your head. Put another plump pillow on your tummy, prop the book up on this, lean your arms on the pillow and enjoy for hours!!!! It sure works for me, and I've been reading since God was a boy! (just kidding) :)

Hire a Faithful Retainer to hold it for you.
Or rest the arm holding the book on a spare pillow. Works for me.

lay on your stomach and use a pillow or two to support your head and shoulders.
place the book on the bed. that way, you're looking down at the book, and can see both halves clearly.

My favorite way of reading uses six servants... 4 to suspend me in the air and one for the big feather fan and one to turn the pages when I say "turn."
