A five foot tall, six compartment hive has 40-50 thousand bees according to a woman I work with who keeps bees as a past time.

A bee hive starts small. Just a queen and some workers. The number of bees is largely determined by how much space they havve to build the comd. When they run out of space a queen will take off with part of the hive to start a new colony.

Every summer I have to fight the urge to ask on here - 'Are Bees looking particularly ginormous this year?' In truth, I'm never sure whether they are or I was permanently damaged by Tales Of The Unexpected.*does that dance in 80's leotard and tights combo* So sorry, I have no idea, but I concur they are HUGE. Definitely huge-ier than last year... I saw one the size of a mouse! Edit- They are a bit thick aren't they? Bashing the window for hours on end totally ignoring the door that is wide open. I tried to help one the other day, and got the Radio Times to usher it on it's way. However, it kept climbing UP the magazine towards my hand, so I would make a 'yeeeaoowyee' noise and lob the Radio Times across the room allowing the Bee to return to bashing it's head against the window. This went on for half an hour. Actually I think I'm the thick one!
