Oh yeah, and he get's mad if someone at the dinner table says "God is good, God is great.... prayer. The prayer must be elaborate and be a few minutes long.like kind of a dinner time blessing and night time prayer all in one praying for everyone etc etc WTF? Theyre called hypocrites(I assume he is catholic since he goes to mass ).
Tell him the Bible says "be ye sober minded" and thats something he aint half drunk and/or high on pot.
Also, if he says his priests always forgives him in confession, tell him the Bible says"if I regard iniquity in my heart, the LORD wont hear me"
That means if he is planning on going out and repeating the same old sins,GOD doesnt hear any of his "I am sorry for.." prayers.
Read john 3:5 and acts 2:38 to him sometime.thats where he needs to start.

This is called a hypocrite, and there are a lot of people that hide behind religion, when they aren't walking the walk or talking the talk. A religious hypocrite is someone that thinks that by going to church 1 x per week or on holiday it wipes out their sins. So, they think, I can continue to do whatever, be bad, sin, and I'll be forgive, my slate will be wiped clean on Sunday.

he is one of those types where going to church makes him look good. Don't worry God knows his heart and his intentions. If he wants a truly elaborate prayer during dinner then maybe suggest he give it then. Maybe eventually it will sink in that he is not exactly living the right way.

Sounds like this personal is going through a spiritual struggle right now. He is being pulled to do the right thing and obey God, but at the same time he is trying to hold onto these worldly things that have sustained him this long.

We all have our battles, none of us are perfect. Sometimes people assume that if we attend church and love God that we are perfect. Don't kid yourself, no one is.

In time God will do His work in this man and make him all He wants him to be. Just pray for him and for his deliverance from the alcohol, drugs, and gambling. That's all we can do. That and remember, not to judge. God works in each of us in His own way and it's not ours to question or draw conclusions from.

You know, this is not unusual. People go to church for a lot of reasons and not necessarily to worship God.
Perhaps it was ingrained in his childhood that you go to church on Sunday.
I had a husband who went to church faithfully every single Sunday and Holy day, but didn't love God one little bit. Go figure.

A hypocrite !!! It is people like him that keep others out of church!!! Some of the "worst seeds" attend church?! Never understood it. I think it's to convince thenselves they are free of all sin and guilt. Good thing he isn't a preacher, eh?!

He sounds confused....Maybe he's the type of person who judges others with one stick -and himself with a different one!

( Nobody is perfect; only God is. And since He is the only one who knows our hearts and minds, you cannot fool Him. )

Unfortunately, people like this man you describe are all over the place...and their actions harm others, like you in this case, because they make you wonder.

Hmmm...I guess you should try to focus on YOUR personal relationship with God, and forget about this man's behaviour. We will all be judged by Him, ultimately. Good luck.

Drinking alcohol and gambling is not illegal but smoking pot is but does that change have to change his belief in god. Don't think so, it is kind of weird but to each their own. It is like people who are in prison for commiting crime/drug use
