and where do u plug it in, im trying to record something on the media center and it says i need it so where do i plug it in at and what is it for

An IR cable is used to send IR commands from one device to another; for example, from a set-top box to a VCR or from a PVR to a set-top box.

Example: Say you have a set-top box and a PC where you record your programs. If you want to record show A from CBS at 5:00 PM, since the tuner is in the set-top box, the PC has to send an IR command to the set-top box to change the channel to CBS at 5:00 PM. You do that by using an IR cable which connects usually from the back of the media center PC to the front of the set-top box.
