A whole host of places and peoples have reasons for disliking Americans and just some of those reasons are its self-appointed role as the world's policeman, interference in the business and politics of sovereign states, Chile and Allende in particular comes to mind, but only selectively - it has a record too lack of intervention in international crises when necessary. That's before you start on the appalling treatment of some of its own citizens.
I personally have nothing against America - I lived there for six months - but I can see why people do.

I don't dislike the Americans, in fact I even like some of them. Jealousy certainly isn't a word I would choose for the general dislike of them, more their arrogant attitude about how wonderful they think they are most of the time.
As for CW's remark about them saving our @rses during WWII, well that's the funniest thing I have heard in a long time. They arrived as the war ended, giving away chocolate and nylons and sleeping with as many women as possible. The war was already won!

I am well aware that there are many perfectly reasonable, intelligent and sensible Americans out there however some of the US tourists you come across with their general loud mouthed, "in your face" attitude really don't serve as a good advertisement for their own country. Plus, the sheer stupidity of some Americans plus the bigotry as espoused by the fundamentalist religious right can be infuriating in the extreme!!!

well i don't hate americans or america at all, i love them for their space exploration and some films also i would love to visit the place someday.
However i do hate arrogance, ignorance and greed of which some americans are known for. I also hate the way the say they saved our 'asses' in ww2 when they simply didn't. They helped with the invasion of nazi europe as did canadians and australians, britain was never close to being conquered, we were never on 'our knees'. Never underestimate the resolve of a true brit.

Why on Earth would anyone want to like them, they are rude ignorant and have no knowledge at all of the outside world

If they live in a country which runs a lot of news stories about the US they may spend a little of their valuable time thinking about us, not too much though.
Unless they are wanting to move here, why would they care about us?

no they are not right - people do not like Americans - not because they are jealous of them, but because they resent most Americans attitude of having a God given right to meddle in other people affairs without having a clue as to what they are doing. When they have b*gg*red it up, they waltz out, leaving everyone else to clear up their mess..... individually they are very nice and generous people, but when they come in 'clumps' they go gung-ho!

Nope. I can't think of a single thing to be jealous about.
Yes, they're certainly rich and successful, but that's a result of their size, not their merits. The big kid at school gets his own way in the playground, but the smaller kids aren't jealous, are they?
I'm comfortably well-off, but I'm not a millionaire. But I have loads of friends, all of whom like and respect me. That makes me one of the richest people in the world.
