As to 2. in your questions is that M v. M established that the U.S. Supreme Court has the right to decide if a law is constitutional. More importantly, it led to the fact that the constitution takes priority over laws. By doing that, it made the Supreme Court a co-equal branch with the legislative and executive branch.
