certain types of mosquito spread malaria and something like 50 million human deaths are caused by this diesease a year now if these little beasts were not here this already over populated [by humans] planet would be even more vastly populated

More so than anything, they are a major food source for other aimals. They are a key part of the diet for many bats and a single bat can eat several thousand in a single night.

The larve (since they are in water) also acts as a filter for the water taking out various bits of organic matter.
