I took a moment to enter your zip code in, and found, according to yahoo maps, that you're in South Dakota. If that is correct, neither butterfly bush (Buddleia) nor crape myrtle (Lagerstoemia) would be hardy in your USDA hardiness zone 4.

I would suggest going with P.G. Hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata) or Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii), both are good at filling up space. I don't think I'd suggest raspberry (Rubus), they can get quite out of hand. Although, if you had someone committed to maintaining them, they could also be quite rewarding as well (the fall harvest).

I hope that this helps
Good luck-

Crepe myrtle are great for dressing up large empty spaces.
