ohhhhhh i can never tell , thats why i get taken in every time
and fall for every slick talker and scammer i meet.
still i would rather be like that then suspicious of everyone.
but i have to say that once i catch someone in a lie, then i rarely belive anything further they say.
and that includes some of the answerers i have seen on here (not talking about you)

Are they overly motivated to convince you? do they seem distracted when you speak but singleminded when they speak? Are they really listening to you or do they seem to have their part of the conversation prewritten. Looking directly in the eyes doesn't work anymore, the good liars are wise to that and can stare straight at you and hand you a lie because often they are completely convinced of their own lies.
Look at the intensity of a persons motivations and their willingness to agree or compromise, these two things are closely related and the balance between them holds the answer to the honesty question. Can't be anymore specific because the reverse psychology is constantly going back and forth but watch those things and you'll see what I mean.

I can spot them out pretty quick, but not always. When someone lie’s to you it usually makes no sense, and they’re nervous. But if everyone were to follow or tap into their instinct then you can feel that their vibe is not right. Sometimes there is a tension between the words out of nowhere, but it's not right to assume or to dissect people’s words just in case you may think there going to lie. Lies always come out one-way or another, so I always give people the benefit of the doubt first. Yes experience helps.

The above answers are fine but technically the best way of spotting a lie is by looking in the eye. is it it is not stable and looks to the left (of the person speaking) then he is most probably lying.

You do not always know.

Some people are easy to read, and are honest to boot. Others are experts at hiding the fact that they are lying. It is all part of the game of life.

Sometimes, liars smile a little. Sometimes they are overly serious, in an attempt to hide what they are doing ... and sometimes they look in a different direction.

Let's not forget: sometimes, people must lie to you .....to protect you. The "little white lie ..."

And sometimes, you know they are lying, they know you know .... and you just have to overlook it, for one reason or another.

*when telling a story, you find them over-reacting, with lots of unnecessary facial expressions and laughing on situations that are not worth the laugh..plus, their expressions are rapidly changing, as in, when someone's smiling he's doing it for a mood, so you can always see the smile, but a lier could laugh to the stomach and frown the very next moment.

*Exactly like the person above has mentioned, mostly, they tend to itch their noses, mess with their hairs, just like doing ANYTHING beside talking, still, not everyone that rubs his nose while talking is a lier.

*if they're obliged to lie in a situation, then try changing the topic and they will just get along very well, like a way to escape suspicion.

*They Swear, A LOT.

*You witness loads of rare vocabulary and exaggerating adjectives.

*obviously, the chain is always broken, you must find something illogical in what they say.

*some facial muscles around the eyes never move in fake smiles, in true ones you can sense the smile in their eyes, not only their cheeks.

*A one who tells about something unusual is not necessarily lying, but a one who ALWAYS do is definitely a lier.

Hey there kalooka,

Well, i don't know if i qualify as a lie detector, i think far from it but i do get a strange vibe from whomever is talking to me and telling me lies. So, the thing is you can't always tell coz they might be really good liars.

Time will tell though........

Probably eyes show if you lie or not.
But the problem that lyres are professional now, I think they take courses in lying.
I thought that I can discover lying people but I discovered it's impossible to do.
Just watch TV & you will find lyers talking in everything & some of them are really proffisonal.

Physical expression will be limited and stiff, with few arm and hand movements. Hand, arm and leg movement are toward their own body, the liar takes up less space.

A person who is lying to you will avoid making eye contact.

Hands touching their face, throat & mouth. Touching or scratching the nose or behind their ear. Not likely to touch his chest/heart with an open hand.

Expressions are limited to mouth movements when someone is faking emotions (like happy, surprised, sad, awe, )instead of the whole face. For example; when someone smiles naturally their whole face is involved: jaw/cheek movement, eyes and forehead push down, etc.

a liar avoids eye contact or looks direct into your eyes too long to make up for their lying.
liars forget what they say. we have an arabic proverb which says, ''if you lie , have a good memory.''
i ask a person whom i suspect one question, then proceed in another direction in my conversation.
after a while, i ask another question, put the answer in my memory and move on.
after a set of questions that have different angles, i put the picture together.
this is done only when the issue at stake is serious, if it is trivial, i dont care to corner the person and move on in the conversation.
the worst liar is one who is handsome, with an innocent face ,making a show to take advantage of someone.
but 3ala meen, i love to catch such a liar and congratulate myself on it.
