Clapped and cheered, just basically made them feel as welcome as possible.

They applauded for everyone- getting a new student in their house was adding another student to the house "family". Not only that, but they would congratulate younger siblings on making it into the "family house". But when Harry got into Gryffindor, it was viewed as a huge "win" for them, and so the applause was a standing ovation complete with screams and cheers- a step well above the other students' welcomes.

They cheered and applauded as their new house mate came to table to join others at Hogwarts. Applause is an ancient sign of acceptance and approval.
