None. If you're looking at a car to fix up for a project find something that the parts for are not so expensive. BMW's are the most expensive cars, in the world, to maintain. Even the batteries have to come from Germany as no one in the U.S. makes a battery to fit them. Parts for a BMW are three to four times as expensive as they are for an American built car. Not a good car for a project.

Ok...first the mustang guy is a complete moron. If you had half of a brain you could walk your silly *** into a pep boys and buy a BMW battery for $50. I have owned 7 BMWs and never bought a battery from 'germany' once. I just use Optima Yellow Tops. Next, the 8 series is the slowest pile of dook made by BMW so I wouldn't suggest it. I would go with a late 80s early 90s 3 series. There are lots of guys that do some pretty cool stuff to those. I have seen everything from a 850ci V12 to a lame *** mustang V8. Lots of options with BMW parts as well. A turbo on a 325i CAN get up to 600-700 hp. If you like a little more car, I have always owned 5 series cars. They are available with V8s and I6s and are a little more 'plush' than the 3 series. Mustangs suck.

I agree with wet sombrero.. Mustang Guy has no idea what he's talking about. The fact that his name has Mustang in it should speak for itself since Mustangs haven't been worth a damn since the 60's.
I'd say go for the e36 model that lasted through the 90's.
Lots of performance upgrades out there from Dinan, Conforti, Autowerkes etc that you can truly pump out a 300 or 400 hp car depending on how much you want to spend on your project.
They're also less expensive to work on now since they're a bit aged, but PERFECT for a project car.
If you're thinking M3 category then don't waste your time on an e36 M3 go for the e46 because you'll spend thousands just getting the old e36 to reach where the e46 STARTS in power.
Hope this helps.

Depends on what you want to do with it. If you want to learn to repair, get E28 528e with M20 engine. Should be able to get any car to the running shape around $6000. Also simple enough for you to take out the engine and rebuild - and does not require special tools to take the engine apart.
If you are looking the build street illegal race cars, I would go with E36 M3.
Looking to restore, then go with rare, difficult to find cars. V12 8 series, old 6 series, 2002 ti. L, E30 M3

The E36 3-series cars are pretty easy to work on. And Walmart does carry the battery for my 318i.

1995 BMW 8 Series... V8 or V12 for under $15,000. Talk about enough potential to rival Ferraris...

Any 3-series. They have tons of upgrades and they look good too. I myself would get and early to mid 90's 3-series.
