I believe the 40GB PS3 is 100% worth it. It doesn't play PS2 games but everyone should have a PS2 by now. The 40GB PS3 has only 2 USB ports instead of the usual 4 USB but if neccessary a USB Multi-Tap can be used. There are no memory card readers which are available in the 60, and 80 GB versions, though if you have a computer you can hook up your digital camera etc and put the files on a USB thumb drive available for use on the PS3. Overall Sony took out these extras for the cost reduction. You still get the blu-ray drive, wi-fi, bluetooth, HDMI, Ethernet, and the primium chrome finish, and most importantly a Playstation console with a garuntee to last 10 years. Proof? Look at the PS2, still selling strong over 100 million sold and counting. Not to also mention that the PSP can wirelessly communicate with the PS3. Example: If you watching a movie downstairs on your PS3 and your ready to go to bed and you have a PSP, the PS3 can wirelessly send the video stream to your PSP, even in high def. Sony has also stated that soon you will be able to access your PS3 data content via PSP anywhere in the world as long as you have an internet connection. Also there are rumors that a new PSP phone is coming out. Sony has many great plans for the Playstation franchise and the 400 dollar PS3 is a great example on how sony is planning and continuing to move forward with its rivals. (P.S the 400 dollar PS3 comes with Spider-Man 3 in Blu-Ray)

The 40GB is nicely really truly worth the money *if* you do not choose backwards compatibility to play PS2 video games. If backwards compatibility is something that's considered necessary you, then attempt to get your palms on a 60GB or an 80GB unit. The 40GB unit also has 2 USB ports really of four. this isn't that a lot of an problem because: a million. you could (might want to) use bluetooth peripherals really of USB ones 2. you could purchase a USB hub in case you run right into a subject matter. yet I *strongly* advise utilising bluetooth contraptions! the superb distinction is that it wouldn't have a multicard reader. I really have by no skill needed this characteristic, yet your mileage would determination. The complicated disk length is thoroughly unimportant, because you could improve it with out affecting the guaranty (the classes on a thanks to attempt this are contained in the playstation guide). I really have a "40GB" unit, upgraded to a 250GB HDD. The 40GB has an benefit over the different SKU gadgets too. that's (presently) the in easy words unit with the CPU man made utilising a 65nm procedure really than a 90nm. What this suggests is that the unit consumes a lot less electricity, produces a lot less warmth and runs slightly quieter than the different gadgets. in case your question is even if that's easily worth finding out to purchase a PS3 (and by no skill specially the 40GB unit), i'd say convinced. - It has some wonderful video games (even in spite of the indisputable fact that no longer as many because the Xbox yet). - it will be utilized as a media server, and as a streaming media shopper (i take advantage of it alongside with MediaTomb). - Is is extremely quiet - you could run Linux on it (for countless motives) - It performs Blu-ray videos - It has equipped-in networking (WiFi and Ethernet) the web adventure remains no longer impressive, in spite of the indisputable fact that that's being superior each and every of the time. that's likewise loose, that's a large plus in my e book.

It has no PS2 b/wards compatibility. So if that doesn't bother you then yes it is.
The difference in HD size isn't too much. It'll take a good while to fill, and then you can either wipe off the rubbish you've accumulated, get a bigger drive or an external one.
Losing 2 USB ports isn't a big deal either. The 2 that are left are more than enough, and you can add a hub if need be.
It depends on what deals you can find. At the moment in the UK the 60GB model is £349 with 2 games. Which, if you like the games, is probably the better deal. (40GB=£299+2 games (£40each))
