He’s been called the Andy Warhol of Japan. Contemporary artist Takashi Murakami has become an international sensation, his works reflecting high art, low art, commerce, and kitsch. This week, a mid-career retrospective opens at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA in downtown Los Angeles, displaying more than 90 of his paintings and sculptures, and hundreds of his consumer goods, from smiley face pillows to his trademark Louis Vuitton bags. Correspondent Bill Whitaker looks at the work of Murakami, visits the pop art phenomenon at his Tokyo workshop, and at the star-studded L.A. gala that kicks off the exhibition.
