Till American companies control all the oil, and Iraq is left desolate and laid barren.

Depends on whether we complete our mission or not.
In order to really establish democracy there it's probably going to take at least another 10 years of fighting, plus a generation of Iraqis born into the situation.
If we run without doing our level best to help democracy grow then the place will collapse shortly after we leave.
Hopefully though on the way out we'll shoot Muqtada al-Sadr right in the middle of his forehead.

Hopefully, not to much longer. The incidence of deaths appears to be decreasing, but the only way we will really know that it is "over" is if the deaths stop and the U.S. withdraws its forces. THEN it will be "over". It could take years.
There is some hope here - the Iraqi's are fed up with the violence and are starting to fight back the terrorists on their own, and the imams are condemning the violence, saying that it is Muslims killing other Muslims, which is forbidden in Islam.

This "mess" is going to last as long as it needs to. We were in the Middle East in the early '90's and ten years later, we are back again. We had the chance to get rid of everyone in the first Gulf War, but because of bleeding hearts and political pressure, we pulled our troops out early and didn't get anything accomplished. If we pull out too early, we will end up going back again or having our country bombed again. History is doomed to repeat if we don't understand the mistakes we made the first time around. I want the troops out as soon as possible, but I believe that if we pull out too soon, we will kick ourselves later.

For ever or until God shows up. The Americans could cut short their part of it by going home. The fundamental problem of competing tribes/religious sects can be solved in two ways genocide or an out break of intelligence.

As long as Bush keeps sending our guys over there. Britain is already pulling out. We have enough war right here on the U.S. Streets, we don't need to be in other peoples business. If you think about it..every time we have gone to war our country was in a recession. Less people...more money to spend.

I don't know. I can't wait until Hillary is elected President and escalates this into a full blown war of at least 100,000 troops--most of which will be drafted, of course. Then, maybe all the democrats will back our country's efforts.

Probably quite a while. I don't hear any of the candidates proposing a quick, easy, way to get out of the region, and wars started are hard to stop.
