Yes, there will be dozens of earthquakes in California and Nevada today. Some are imperceptible. As a native Californian, we don't get alarmed unless it is over a 5.0.

If you would like to see the listing of earthquakes that have occurred in California and Nevada, go to:

http://quake.usgs.gov/recenteqs/FaultMaps/121-36_eqs.htm

When you are on that webpage, in the upper left hand corner there is a link to the map, which will show you where they are occurring and their magnitude.

The study of earthquakes (seismology) is a fascinating. subject.

There are measurable earthquakes in California EVERY day, so your friends are essentially telling you nothing. Ask them how big an earthquake will occur--the bigger the magnitude, the less likely will the earthquake, and the more impressive will be your friends' prediction if it comes true.

Well there have been several today. So far they have been very small with the largest only a 2.1 magitude near The Geysers, CA at 945 am PST.
