He wrote music during the Romantic period, and it was very melodic and harmonious; quite possibly, the greatest composer of the Romantic period!

Tchaikovsky Style

Yeah, answerman is way off. "Swan Lake" was not in "The Nutcracker". They were separate ballets. Anyway...

Tchaikovsky very much epitomized the Romantic era. Like many Romantic composers, he used dramatic tales for the basis of his major works (especially doomed lovers and such). His music used dramatic intensity, emotional expressiveness, and, his style specifically, combined his love for folk music, the Russian people, and dance.

You can do a search for the Romantic Era in music in the Groves Music Online or, if you don't want to subscribe to that, simply wikipedia or other informative sites.

Tchaikovsky is without doubt a romantic composer. His music is typical of the romantic period in that it is highly expressive of human emotion. It follows most of the "rules" for the classical period, but adds elements of dissonance to "flavor" the music with threads of humanity.
The structure of the music tends to be freer in form than that of the classical period. Tchaikovsky is remowned for marvellous melody, perhaps the greatest in this respect since Mozart. This facility with melody sometimes leads his music to be criticised as for some audiences, it becomes too much of a good thing and a little like eating to much chocolate. Having said that, like all rich things, taken in moderate doses its good for your soul.

Tchaikovsky was basically a romantic - which means that the music could be said to portray moods and feelings rather than being just 'pure' music as in the classical period of Mozart and Haydn. Think of his Fantasy Overture 'Romeo and Juliet' which attempts to portray in music the feelings and sense of Shakespeare's play. To some extent he could be said to have dabbled in nationalism which was a strong force in music of his period - think 1812 Overture. His music is also infused at times with that special brand of Russian melancholy, sometimes followed by frenetic enjoyment. Think particularly of the 4th and 6th symphonies. Ballet was a Russian speciality at his time and he brought the ballet to its peak with Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker. Some would say those ballets have never been surpassed
