I don't really have an answer, I just wanted to get everyone's attention.

I say that there should be 2 sticky posts at the top of the Philosophy section.

The first should be: "DO NOT ASK WHAT IS THE MEANING OF LIFE?"

The second should be: "DO NOT ASK WHAT IS THE POINT OF LIFE"!

Who's with me?!

Hiya Mck. I don't mind people seeking an answer, I'm just bothered by the fact that they eem to not even try looking at any of the other 11 million times the question has been asked. How much more detail or insight do you really thinnk is gonna come from it being asked yet again?

To Larissa:
Yes, I know that is true. However no other question has been asked nearly as much as those have.

To Ms Mcmee:
I understand your point, but where's the fun in answering with one of the same 3 answers for the 10,000th time? Seems pretty monotonous to me. But then again, I'm not one that is easily amused.

2007-11-04 05:26:57 · update #3

To Mck again:
Yes, I, or anyone else, could infact be the next Kant or Socrates, but wouldn't first actually looking at the answers that have already been given be a better way to find insights? Asking now will only yield a couple dozen answers at best. There are probably over a million that have already been given. And I have answered myself on many occasions. (and yes, I did answer 42 once in a while).

To "And I heard...":
What if life is meaningless? Does it really change anything? You still have to go to work or school in the morning. You still have to take care of your kids. The bills still have to be paid. So why should it matter?

To Moderation:
LOL! I have done that actually. And you are correct. It gets asked so many times that I fell off of my chair once. So that was out. I know that it's a futile gesture on my part, but I had to vent a lil I guess.
Thanks for the Input and b koo!

I can't choose a best answer so I'm going to leave it to a vote.

Thanks for all the comments!

I don't know if I'm "with you".
What is the meaning of "with"? :-)

I do confess, I originally discovered the philosophy section while chasing a contact's "meaning of life" question. It was my introduction to the (slightly) more serious side of Y!A. Previously, I had only answered ridiculous questions such as, "When Jesus rose from the dead, was he a Vampire or a Zombie?" Hmm...bad example--that's actually a brilliant question. Nevermind.

I think the meaning-chasers are mostly new Y!Aers--they don't know better--but yes, the repetition can become annoying. Earlier this week, I was traveling all day, book-less, and extremely bored, so I decided that I was going to answer every open "Meaning of Life" question in the section, and write something completely different each time. I then spent several minutes laughing manically at my own plan. (As I said, I was *bored*.) In the end, however, I only answered it once before losing interest. Truth be told, it was simply *too* boring...

Therefore, I cast my vote for an "Irrelevant Personal Quests" section. That way, we can lump in the "Does God exist?" and the "Am I pregnant?" people as well. The upside is, I could go there and tell irrelevant personal stories, just like the ones I've told here. ;-)

Meaning of life is irrelevant to me because I know I am small and I want to take no burden that I can not carry.

If God created life, He ought to be the one Who would have had a meaning or purpose for it and He being omnipotent, would certainly need no help from us in fulfilling the same... hence irrelevant for us to either know or care for any meaning to life.

All I want is to be happy and I can't be happy by eternally searching for any meaning or central purpose to my life that is beyond my capability to find out in this life. I therefore try my best to forget that my small life too ought to have some meaning or purpose.... whatever it is can not be more important than my happiness... so 'forget it' is my motto...... not that I can make any difference even if I were to search for and find out and strive to fulfill it....... after all I am rather small!! And you bet, I never asked this question, even when I was new here. I like to answer though, just to take a fresh shot at it in good humor.

The meaning of life seems to be asking what the meaning of life is throughout our entire lives. Apparently this means asking on Y! Answers as well. Unfortunately, if they haven't found the answer yet (or, more likely, the one they want to hear) those individuals asking are very unlikely to find the answers on Y! Answers. One shouldn't discourage them from seeking any possible avenues available to them for discovering this answer by themselves. Personally, I never even look at the question if it's asking about the meaning of life (unless they are on my contact list, as you are). I would have to recommend the same to other people who are annoyed with this cliched question.

Gee,
The regulars (lvl 6,7) in R&S have turned repeated questions as this into drinking games, size and amounts, etc. As I don't know Philosophisors in this section perhaps this is an avenue to look into? Then of course the down side is too drunk to type - so nevermind.
Perhaps this is a part of being human, that every section has repeated questions that cause this reaction to regualrs. Laundry must get millions of repeat stain questions. Hmm, I did ask why people don't check in search box - before - asking as it is asked so often, but people need human touch so badly they ask and ask.
Peace.

Who knows what the meaning of life is, maybe there is some wierd being who designed everything; but how did the designer come about, and how did the universe come about and what does the universe exist in??!! How did the whole thing start and what was before that? (Sorry if i just asked loads of questions!) Anyway, as far as i'm concerned life is what people make it, until someone can proove otherwise!

Although I don't see the point in the question:What is the meaning of life,

I also don't see the point in posting this up asking people to stop asking: What is the meaning of life.

Also, who knows, we might get a different answer everytime, since Yahoo Answers puts and expired limits to answers. Philosophy does not have correct answers, only beliefs. So it is not like Math, where there is a true answer.

Oh, come on! Don't be such a grumpy old man! Let EVERY single person on this earth ASK this question and whosoever comes up with an answer should ENLIGHTEN the rest of us mortals. He/She will then be crowned 'THE BUDHHA' of our modern times...

It's true the question's been asked umpteen number of times and you being grand dad of Y/A [based on your date of birth on yahoo, I mean, date of joining], have seen it more often than others. Now, be a little more indulgent when you see one, smile your all-knowing smile and move on...without losing your patience.

P.S. I wonder what you're going to do when its time for your own children or grand children to ask this very same question!!! Maybe you'd direct them to this site for some research of their own (no offence meant!)...

See, that's exactly what happens when people go for too long without wearing their Tin-foil microwave-blocking Anti-Alien mind control hats.

Those are NOT questions; those are Alien conspiratorial lateral thinking conundrums aimed at distracting our feeble minds, while we are being plumped for eventual deep-ocean consumption.

It's TRUE, my friend, eat (and think) less and you might "LIVE" longer.
.
.
What??? You think I'm pulling your leg??? See! There you go "thinking" again. I see someone hasn't been wearing his hat, lately! ... Don't be so gullible my friend - start wearing the hat. WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO LOSE? IT'S PRACTICALLY FREE AND ABSOLUTELY HARMLESS, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. Not to mention, THEY LOOK AWESOME. :-)

P.S. I've been wearing my Tin-foil hat "religiously" for the past 10 years or so and, as you can tell, I'm completely cured of any and all thinking temptations and/or Alien influences.

come on, Gee...I think you had the best answer, when I asked to describe life in one word...

Progress.
That sums it up very well.

So, since you've already answered the question so well, can't you allow others to progress into the question, while you progress out?
------------
EDIT:
For all I know, you could be the next Malcom X with brilliant opinions I may not have heard, on life's meaning...though, with as much time as people have wondered about, and tried to answer it, you have a very good point.

Isn't this question insight, itself?
It reminds us we should live life, rather than wondering why we do so.

I thought you provided some very good insight on your website..the meaning of individuals' lives can add up to the total meaning..

Loved your site, so here's the link, for others:
http://www.geespace.net/

EDIT, again:
I've looked at other answers. Personally, I was only hoping to hear some intelligent/interesting responses and provoke some thought...Socrates would constantly ask questions, just to hear individual responses.

I think we see the question so much, because it is impossible to answer conclusively.

Isn't it interesting, that no matter how many times the question is asked, there are new perspectives to be found?
----------------------------------
...by saying life is meaningless, aren't people just saying that kids, etc. are meaningless...or, do they find things in life meaningful, while calling life itself meaningless?

If they really thought so, why haven't they ended thier life, in search of meaning?
Why would they even give a meaningless answer, in a meaningless life?

"If you knew what life was worth,
you would look for yours on Earth."
-Bob Marley
--------------
to Gee, again:
after all, even people who agree, which I do, in a way, were attracted by the statement, that this is the meaning of life...which it is..
The Meaning, in my opinion: the questioning of everything presented to you, in order to come to conclusions or conclude that more questions are nessecary.

Life to me, is a game which I enjoy playing..
your turn, if you'd like to play again...

YES YES YES
It seems that everytime I walk into the philosophy door, there it is waiting for me.and I think deja vu? time warp? stupid people that dont bother to read the million of reference pop ups while they are typing the question ? do they really want know or is it one of those questions that they ask out of boredom or inabilty to think of a real question ?
are they the same people that ask "If a tree falls"----? and "what came first"-----------?
so anyway I attempted to answer the first couple of times I saw them but then I realized that I was pouring water down a infinite black hole.
Ive even thought of compiling a bunch of theories and posting them on my blog. then when I run into the question I could post a link.
but then why should I do the research for them .
because thats the real meaning of life isnt it? the search.
peace><>
