It is a highly stylized laurel wreath. In ancient Roman times, the laurel wreath symbolized excellence in some area, such as athletics, politics the arts, etc. It was, either, worn about the crown of the head, or, held over the head by an assistant.

In many events and occasions, the wreath was the actual prize, instead of money, a tropy or any other form of recognition.

It may be interesting to note that this wreath is the badge symbol for the General Motors Cadillac brand of automobile, which was once considered the epitome of American luxury automobile. The designer of this graphic was probably not aware of this and chose an inappropriate symbol for his illustration.

This is why research should always be factored into a designer's estimate for a commission. Many, who read my answers, here, on Yahoo Answers, may have noticed how much I emphasize the importance of research in this kind of work.

You can't get arrested for having a picture of pot... People wear shirts with pot leaves on them why would you get in trouble for having it on your formspring? Smh.. You should try being less gullible.
