Actually, all the xbox 360's now being produced are being made with the new chipset which runs at much cooler temperatures, which fixes this problem. Which was caused by overheating of the sauder connections. What would happen is that they would overheat, cool down, over heat, cool down, and so on. Eventually because of all the flexing, the sauder would crack and the you would get the three red lights of death. It should not happen at all with the new chipset however, if it does happen Microsoft has extended their warranty on the systems to 3 years. So I would say it is a safe bet. Nevermind a PS3. I own all three next gen systems and my PS3 doesnt even get used. I regret buying it.

The Elite does not guarantee that you will not get a ring of death. As a matter of fact, several people have reported that they're still getting the ring of death on their Elites. The Elite supposedly has a lesser chance of getting the ring of death because MS is using better quality assurance materials (ie, materials that's been extensively tested to not fail).
The Falcon chipset is supposed to help solve the overheating problem, which is believed to be the main cause of the ring of death. But so far, the Falcon chip has only been found in the Halo 3 Edition 360. Look for a white sticker on the outside of the box, and the label will give you some info. Look for team FDOU and lot 734 or later. But according to some sites, the CPU isn't to be blamed for the ring of death, but the GPU that's to blame. The Falcon chip is for the CPU, not the GPU, so there's a chance that the Halo 3 edition will also get the ring of death. It's still too early to say whether or not the Halo 3 edition will get the ring of death.
If you want the 360, just go ahead and get it. You do have a 3 year warranty for the ring of death. I don't think there's any guarantee way to get a 360 that won't get the ring of death. No one, not even MS, really knows what's causing the ring of death. It could be overheating. It could be a design flaw. It could be faulty hardware.

Yes. If you bought it in 2 months, yes. If you buy it in15 years, yes. MS has had ample time to recall, fix and redistribute, or just give people back fixed Xbox's. Have they, NO. They give refurbished consoled just as likely to overheat and get RRoD. Even the Halo editions get RRoD. To put it in terms everyone can understand; Microsoft doesn't care about you. They say that they're coming out with 65nm GPU's that will solve RRoD, but the most obvious questions are, will it? Probly not. and Where was this 2 years ago? So do your self a favour get a PS3, its more reliable, games are coming, free wifi and online play so you save some money, graphics are are same as Xbox now and will only get better once the developers utilize the full potential.
1refuse2looze4 says that it is the consumers fault, and that is such BS. There are so many people, even now, that play rarely and get it, and even more people that have it happen, get a replacement console from MS, and they plug it in, play for a few minutes and RROD!

Microsoft don't know how to prevent the red ring of death. It is caused by multiple systems in the Xbox failing at once so it's not a simple problem to fix. All 360s are vulnerable to it. You can only hope it doesn't happen to you and if it does happen that it's while the warranty covers you.

From what I've seen and heard it's all luck of the draw. You'll hear stories of people who have returned their 360's multiple times and you'll hear stories like mine where I've had my 360 for 2 years now and I've never had the RRoD happen to me or any of my other friends who have also had 360's for a couple years now

People complain about them getin the ring of death..It's because they play for hours!!..And of course if you play for like 5 hrs it's going to get overheated!!..i only play for like 1 hr then let it cool...
IT'S COMMON SENSE!! IF YOU PLAY FOR HOURS YOU'RE XBOX IS GOIN TO OVER HEAT!!!.
but no real problems if you play for like 1hr
i've had my 360 since it's came out and i have not gotten the ring of death
you just gotta be careful
