overcompensating for ignorance*

Unconsciously they try to hide their shortcomings. It's uncontrolled human nature to use volume to compensate ... they'll turn up the volume to speak to a blind person - until the blind person reminds them they are not deaf; they will talk louder and louder when trying to communicate with someone speaking broken English (or whatever); and I know that some people talk louder when on a long distance call even though reception is good. And then there are the supposed know it alls ... and as you have said ... the louder and the more they talk the less they really know. It's a communication fact that the more you listen, the more you will learn. Communication is a two way process, but wasted words waste time.
