Yes, through what is called "citation by publication." Look at the Michigan Rules of Civil Procedure for the requirements. Default judgments based on citation by publication are generally fairly easy to overturn so, if they are findable, it is better to go ahead and find them and personally serve them.

if you can not locate a person in order to send a summons to them, which has to be delievered by hand by a court appointed official. usually a sheriff. and if it is a civil matter then YOU have to be the one to find them. the court will not bother. if you can not find them, and a summons issued, you can not do anything legally against them. because everyone has the right to defend themselves. and as far as publication goes, this is incorrect. there could be reasons this person does not read the newspaper etc. it is not legal to do this.

yes.
they are summoned to court by publication of the notice for a minimum of four weeks (I think) at once per week in the newspaper of record in the jurisdiction where the case was filed.
If they fail to show, judgment is entered for the plaintiff in the amount asked for.
