If the Soviet Union succesfully invaded and took control of Afghanistan would they of invaded Iran or Pakistan? Weren't the trying to make it to the Ocean?

Oil, warm water ports, control of the Straits of Hormuz...that would be a tempting target, but in reality, the Soviets would have installed a "friendly" government there by subterfuge. Pakistan would have been a more easily obtainable target. The Indians hate the Pakistanis, therefor no interference from them.

That would have allowed the communists to leverage a new government in Iran, or the mullahs would really face invasion.

I think Iran. The Soviets tried to take over Iran in the late 1940s. The leftist prime minister was leaning toward them but was ousted by the Shah [whom the Prime Ministers had effectively removed from power in 1941 so they could tilt toward Germany -- hating the British, I suspect].
