I would like to take some kind of herbal supplement for depression, but I've heard that there are many types of herbal remedies that you can't take if you are on birth control. Does any one know of an herbal remedy for depression that I could take with birth control?

Rhodiola rosacea. It is more effective than St John's Wort as it falls under the adaptogens and helps the body meet the demands of stress, whether physical, mental or emotional. It is a known effective anti-depressant. Unlike St John's wort, it is not known to interfere with the birth control pill. Another one you can take is Lemon balm. If you are on any kind of medication it is always best to check with a qualified pharmacist first before taking any herbal supplement as they are in a position to know about possible drug-herb interactions.

Best wishes.

You definetly need to ask your doctor to make sure you are not causing the birth control to be inaffective and lead to an un-wanted pregnancy. Ask your doctor about St. John's Wort. I took it for a while but it was after I stopped taking birth control. Good luck!

That's where the herbal pharmacist comes in. Consult with him or her, stressing that you take the BPC and want it to continue functioning, and they will prescribe the right herbs. In TX, herbalists have to be licensed--passing a test, etc., so if it were me, I would trust them.

Or, if you're seriously wary of their skills, how about an acupuncturist? Their healing techniques have been around long before Columbus ever landed in the new world, and they work. I'd try acupuncture before I'd try herbs. In fact I'm thinking about trying acupuncture soon for my depression.
