The name of the song was "(There Was A )Tall Oak Tree" by Dorsey Burnette. It only went to # 23 in 1960.

According to one source "(There Was A) Tall Oak Tree" by Dorsey Burnette reached #23 on Billboard on 1/18/60.

It's funny that I got your question. Out of the blue the other day, I started singing this song in my head and was amazed at how much of the song (lyrics) I remembered after all this time. I guess that part of my brain is still alive.
