In the UK all private Landlords need to be registered with the local council. You should be able to check with them whether this is the case

Some places you can look up the owner of property on the Internet. Like for me: Go the the county web site and click on tax assessors office and look up property by street. You'll see who owns the house and maybe what the assessed value is.

Renting a home is still a business right? So they are supposed to get some paperworks done, why not check the name on the business papers filed in your municipality or something
