This issue is not that simple.

For argument's sake, if Bill Gates could create such a program (very very very unlikely, given how complex this coding would need to be), how will this 'magic' program determine the difference between your child's Christening (where, in many cases clothes are not worn by the children) and child porography?

Arguably, both could be considered child pornography, but there is a strong distinction between whether the indiviual situations are morally unacceptable or not.

Then there is the question of how do you stop the more geeky paedophiles from removing this program from the computer? What if the program needs regular updates? How do you get these programs onto every single computer in the first place??

For me, this reason alone is enough to conclude that creating such a program would be highly impractical, but on the practical, technical, aspect though, I think we are slowly getting there in terms of being able to recognise (and read) car number plates and facial recognition is generally getting better and better, but there are no programs that would be able to determine the difference between a snow scene and a jungle scene (photos in greyscale just make things more difficult).


I think it goes without saying that distinguishing between child porn and innocent home photos is one that even humans often cannot decide upon (is taking pictures of your child in the bath, child porn?). Then you have to find a way of getting the program to check whether this is an innocent mother / father blogging pictures of their child or whether this is an international child sex-slave gang pretending to be a mother / father posting innocent blogs?



Apologies for the rant, but I hope it gets my point across that there is no feasible method for this ever happening.

First - I doubt Bill Gates writes much code any more. He's management.

Second - how do you identify pornography, especially pictures, and tell it apart from pictures of Aunt Marge at the 4th of July picnic? It's probably impossible at this point to scan the data that makes up a .jpg or .gif file and get an idea of what it shows. You could use the name of the file or the metadata tags to guess what it is, but all a perp has to do is change that to say "aunt Marge", and he's home free.
