What is vertical interegation and horizontal integration in the travel and tourism industry?

Horizontal integration - Companies try to buy up similar companies...their competition. Have you noticed these hotel chains like Hilton now own various different brands at various price points? Have you noticed how all the airlines a few years ago also owned discount airlines under a different name. Like Delta owned an airline named Song? etc.

Vertical integration. Sometimes the big companies, especially the airlines, purchase reservation services, tour companies, hotels, etc. This is a little less common today, but it certainly happens sometimes.
