So i live in the Bristol area of Tennessee, and its one of those places were you always hold the door for people, always shoot them a smile regardless of whether you know them, always speak to them, etc.

But I visited California a few weeks back for a basketball tournament, and i noticed that everyone i held a door for kinda gave me a harsh look, everytime i smiled at someone they looked at me like i was crazy, and if I said hi to a stranger, they looked at me like I was stalking them or something

anyone had any similar experiences?

OMG, yes! Cleveland Ohio is not much different from how California sounds. I was born and raised here. I have family in West Virginia. People there are sooo much kinder and connected to their fellow human beings. I have alot of good friends here I found but the general attitude of the City is so rude and aloof, Especially in the wealthier Suburbs like Mayfield Heights, Westlake, and so-on. I am a Paramedic and my job takes me to alot of different areas. I try to smile at people and they look at me as if they think I am an Alien for doing so. How sad is that? I have been thinking more and more about moving elsewhere where people act more like human beings and treat eachother as such.

Los Angeles ... harsh and very rude .. and very dangerous and dirty too. BAD experience all around, and ... unfortunately ... I was stationed there while on Active Duty with the US Military. I was so happy to finally get orders away from that Duty Station .. couldn't arrange to leave fast enough!

Now for the most polite .. I've had good times with several areas ... and that is for sure. I can't really say one in particular, And when I visited my siblings at their homes .. these areas were definitely polite and warm (Michigan and Wyoming). But ... I like rural areas anyway!

Yes, I have! I went to California and everyone looked at me wierd when I was just being nice. However, I traveled to Texas and everyone would hold the doors open, smile, etc.

I have to say that DC is pretty darn rude.

NYC surprised the heck out of me. I have 4 college degrees, but the subway map completely eluded me. A kind young lady took pity on me and offered her assistance.
