Your Vonage TA limits bandwidth to other systems in order to reserve enough bandwidth for the phone system to work properly. That's why it drags your Internet connection speed down.

When you connect your switch directly to the DSL or cable modem you generally are limited to one public IP address by your ISP. That's why only one connection works when you place the switch there.

If you want to split the connection prior to hooking up your Vonage TA, you'll need another router between the DSL or cable modem and the switch. You then connect your computer and the Vonage TA to the switch.

Keep in mind that this configuration can make your phone connection unusable when you're on the Internet as the TA can no longer reserve the bandwidth that it needs. You would also need to check the LAN side IP configuration on the router and the Vonage TA to ensure that they were all on different subnets. If the same IP subnet exists on both sides of a router, communication will fail. If you set the first router up to use 192.168.1.1 mask 255.255.255.0 and the Vonage TA to use 192.168.2.1 mask 255.255.255.0 then everything would work fine. If this is all gibberish to you, either get a knowledgeable friend or pay a pro to set it up for you.
