Two basic methods exist -
1) soundproofing (eg. stick your fingers in your ears)
2) electronic noise cancellation (see link)

A third method, adopted by drivers of large cars, is to drown out the rest of the world something else (typically 'rap music'), however this is not to be recommended because then everyone nearby thinks you are a drug dealer (or just an inconsiderate b*stard)
