If the plates stopped moving that would initially stop all mountain building, subduction and earthquakes. There would also be a deeper problem within the mantle. If the plates stopped moving this would indicate a cooling deep underground and then the thermal output from the Earth would be lower. This could be catastrophic for the surface climate and way we know life.

Your question is badly phrased.
If, as you phrased it, the plates stopped moving, then they would immediately start moving again, because the forces that cause them to move would still be working.
If you meant, what would have to happen for the plates to stop moving, then the answer is that the Earth's core would have to somehow lose all its radioactivity so that it stopped generating heat, then the convection currents in the mantle would stop moving, then there would be no force acting on the plates.

Your question is wrongly phrased. If, as you phrased it, the plates stopped shifting, then they might as we communicate initiate shifting back, because of the fact the forces that lead them to pass would nonetheless be working. in case you meant, what would would desire to ensue for the plates to give up shifting, then the respond is that the Earth's center would would desire to a technique or the different lose all its radioactivity so as that it stopped producing warmth, then the convection currents contained in the mantle would give up shifting, then there would be no tension appearing on the plates.

For them to stop moving the earths inner core would have to cool quite a bit. If that were to happen no more earthquakes, volcanoes would stop, no more hot springs(i.e. yellow stone parks old faithful).

Its a hypothetical situation and quite scary to think of.
To me it would mean a serious problem in the "tummy" ,of mother earth, a catastrophe to happen. Movements of plates is part of geodynamic process within the earth and its presence indicate that the earth is "alive" and its absence would indicate impending "death of earth" . The very thought of plates stopped moving is a scenario to me like a healthy body suddenly transforming into a dead body - a mass unable to breathe.

Eventually the entire planet would be covered by the ocean because of the erosion of land.

They will never stop, so why ask this question?
Earthquakes and volcanoes would stop though.
