I think most people don't feel they are appreciated enough. That's why I try to show appreciation to people I love, waitresses, etc.
Also complimenting strangers on their clothes or jewelry is nice. I complimented an older lady once on her blouse and she just started beaming, she was so happy. Her husband was standing right next to her, looking dopey and blah, and I figured that it probably had been a long time since that guy had said anything nice to his pretty wife. It made me feel good that I had made her feel good.
