Usually the recoil housing comes right off with three or four bolts. Or sometimes the engine cover has to come off with it, but that's not difficult. After that, take a moment to study the anatomy of the recoil assembly. Using clock positions, remember where the spring end is compared to where it's anchored, and so on. Replacement assemblies are rather cheap too.

Get the model number off the engine and go to outdoordistributors.com. There you can get an exploded view of the engine. It will help in the disassembly and assembly. Remember to wind the rope against the spring a few turns so that it will recoil.
