Does anyone have any ideas? I would really like them to participate in some sort. All the other classes Kinder on up are singing, but my middle schoolers refuse to sing. Any ideas?

I don't really have a big problem with cameras in the main part of the rest room, but if they're over the stalls, themselves, I'd have to make a big, giant, fuss about that one. If you live in the US, to the best of my understanding, that is a violation of a right to privacy (in a situation when a person has a reasonable expectation of privacy). I'd tell my kids not to drink while they're at school, so they wouldn't have to use the rest rooms. The school needs to find a better way, whether that's to get someone to stand outside and see who goes in there for how long, to take names of who gets a pass to go - whatever. In the past, schools have seemed to manage to keep problems to a minimum without cameras over the stalls. The parents need to get together on that one and see if there's an attorney who will handle the matter, if your country has laws against such things.

Middle schoolers usual don't like singing because they're friends are around. Have them do something else, like act out the words with hand motions or give them a chance to have their ideas told. They usually like having attention and being in charge. Pick a few kids who do like singing, and let them sing while the others dance. The children will be thankful and the parents will love it if they put on a wordless skit with costumes and dancing. Have fun!

Maybe a little holiday skit? Like Santa's workshop or something to that effect. Or have them recite "Twas the Night Before Christmas" a few of them each read one paragraph while the others act it out.

Refuse to sing? In my day there was no such thing as refusing to do anything the teacher asked or I would face the wrath of my parents.

Good luck dear! Nowadays it is a tough profession.

I don't know why type of program you are putting on, but could the middle schoolers be a pretend audience watching the school play? I have seen this done in other programs, the kids sit on the edge of the stage and periodically comment on the show or interact with the actors.

Isaw a GREAT skit with a christmas song once that was a group of kids in dark clothes with white gloves (I think they were on stands to make a pyramid) who did a almost glow in the dark routine-mostly because the gloves stand out on a low lit stage-to a song. They fluttered and waved and did almost sign language to it and it was really fun to do I bet and fun to watch-no singing!

Have them make a sign expressing the meaning of Christmas on placards. Have them write one liners about how they can help others or family for Christmas. . Make the signs colorful and large enough to be seen by an audience. Good luck and be happy, I hope this helps.

Can they whistle?

Seriously, I once saw a school choir which also had a bunch of older lads at the back, and one of the verses was these lads whistling. It was brilliant!

Why don't you ask them if they have any ideas on what they are willing to do, then you dont have to worry about them disagreeing and they will still be partisipating.
