Detergents interfere with the phospholipid cell membrane, causing the cell to lose cell membrane integrity, which kills it. This is true for animal cells as well as bacteria. Luckily for us animals, our skin cells are already dead and keratinized. Not so for bacteria. So washing gets rid of them.
