Whales migrate to reach ocean areas most suited to their changing needs throughout the year. They search out zones of the ocean which are most productive in krill when they need to feed heavily. Then there are better zones for mating and birthing. As the oceans react to seasonal changes the whales have to move to optimise their lives.
