Is 4gb of ram too much in a laptop ?

I am going to upgrade soon with a 4gb option (for future proofing -to a degree).
I used to think 1gb would be too much ...up until a few years back.
I'm just not sure I'd use the 4gb to its full potental yet.

You probably won't get much use out of 4 GiB though. Your graphics chip will use part of that address space for its RAM (even discrete graphics chips do that) although some newer computers can remap the memory to avoid the holes but that only works if you're running a 64 bit OS which most people aren't (the 64 bit versions of Windows are a bit of joke anyway) and Windows XP and Vista 32 bit can't really use more than 3 GiB of RAM (they can address 4 GiB but at least 1 GiB is reserved for the OS and not available to applications, even then each application can only use 2 GiB).

You probably won't use the 4GB, but MS recommends at least 2 GB if you are running Vista and Office 2007. For the average user, 2 GB has almost become the norm. Almost all of our new laptops (at work) are coming with 4 GB of ram.

go through the papers of your laptop.. The manual will tell how much of RAM can be utilized to its full.. If that says that RAM can be upgraded to 4gb.. You upgrade only then.. & if you don't find out contact your vendor..

First you have to know if your laptop can handle 4gb,unless your running a 64bit operating system your pc will not recognize 4gb, and if your running XP 4gb is worthless, the best way to see what your computer can handle is use this link and run the Crucial Scanner, it will tell you what you have , what your computer can handle and give you all your upgrade options, my suggestion is a 2gb kit for a laptop http://www.crucial.com/

No, never worry about too much of RAM. Think about you will be opening up 10 more applications without lagging and waiting. YAH!!!!
