This is about as simple as I know.
If you are not sure of the terms then you need to familiarize yourself with some terms to understand.

Okaaaaay.

Put in the simplest terms (and yes I know that there are exceptions etc) each group of numbers is called an IP address and they represent something on a network. Usually a PC, a server or a printer.

The numbers aren't random, they have some meaning that tells you a little about what they do or where they are located. The can range between 000 and 255 (the biggest number that you can right in using three digits of binary).

Usually the first two groups of three digits tell you whether the device is located inside your network or outside of it (eg, on the internet).

192.168 means that the device that you are talking about is part of your local network.

If the numbers are not 192.168 then they tell you where in the world the device is located (set of numbers on the internet are usually rented out/owned by somebody, and there is a register that you can look up to find this out).

The third group of three digits can be set by the administrator of the network. Usually they use this to groups similar devices together. For example, all of your printers might be on 192.168.100. The third groups of three numbers then represents an individual device. You can have up to 256 of these.

For example

192.168 tells you that the device is on your network

192.168.100 tells you that it is a printer

192.168.100.001 tells you that it is the big white printer net to your desk.

192.168.01.1 would be the address of your personal PC on what is probably a very small home network.
