I bought this machine right before dual cores were becoming very affordable. It is still a good machine so I think if I could just upgrade to a good dual core, I could get another good two years out of it.

in your dell spec your chip set is explained I belive you have the intel 915 chip set. this is not upgradable to a dual core.
I have the same system in a hp.

but if you have the intel 945 chipset you can upgrade.

Notebooks and laptops have very limited upgrade options. It is very rare to be able to upgrade the CPU in a notebooks or laptops.
